Sunway International School (SIS) is the only international school in Malaysia offering the Ontario (Canada) Secondary School curriculum from Grades 7-11. Since the opening of SIS in January 2008 with 22 students, the school has grown steadily and now has a population of close to 500 students. Although we have made significant inroads with our marketing initiatives, most of our growth is directly attributable to student and parental confidence and satisfaction with the programme.
There are three significant factors which make Sunway International School so different and appealing to our constituents - these three factors are curriculum; faculty and facility. The curriculum, faculty and facility make SIS distinctly unique in Malaysia and certainly appealing to those who wish to have their children thoroughly grounded in English and well-prepared to continue to post-secondary programmes at English speaking universities.
The curriculum at SIS is based on the Ontario (Canada) Ministry of Education requirements. It is a student-centred, performance-driven programme where students are taught knowledge and understanding, not just to write exams, but to take this knowledge to apply it and to create with it, and to communicate it. It is a different way of learning and our students are enjoying and benefiting from our curriculum approach.
The Grade 7 & 8 program is the foundation for the future of SIS. There is a strong emphasis on Language Arts and Mathematics in our Grade 7 & 8 program with a decided stress on Reading. We believe that reading and literacy are the main ingredients in shaping the future academic pursuits of our students. The wider the base that we can build for them at this time will result in greater success in secondary school and beyond. As more and more students progress from Grade 8 into Grade 9 through Grade 11 at SIS, the academic program will become increasingly stronger.
The faculty is extremely significant in an International School. At SIS, all teachers are Ontario-certified teachers – what does this mean? Ontario-certified teachers are Canadian citizens who, in addition to subject expertise, have additional qualifications in teaching. The teaching qualifications will mean that the teachers will bring a wide variety of teaching/learning strategies along with different types of assessment/evaluation methods to ensure the greatest learning opportunities for our students. As a Principal, it is gratifying to know that our teachers are qualified, dedicated and hard-working. In September 2012, we moved into our brand new building. In addition to the laptop programme in Grade 9-11, our school is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. All classrooms are electronically equipped with overhead and smart board access; the cafeteria is spacious and comfortable; the library is very functional and connected to the Sunway University library for additional use; the SIS Hall functions as an excellent gymnasium and a multi-purpose hall; the science labs are fully equipped; and the hostel facilities are exceptional.
When you take an excellent curriculum program, combine it with an equally excellent teaching faculty and add an excellent facility, you have Sunway International School.
